Volunteers Remove Invasive Plants at Homer Lake to Improve Habitat

On Saturday, April 13th, eight volunteers with Champaign County Audubon Society partnered with the Champaign County Forest Preserve District to spend a few hours removing invasive shrubs from an area near where migratory Northern Saw-Whet Owls spend the winter.

Invasive shrubs that were removed were piled up to create shelter for animals, and native species of plants were uncovered so they will now be able to grow, improving the ecology at Homer Lake and improving habitat for birds.

We plan to partner with CCFPD again this fall to continue to improve that area, so if you would like to be part of this work, email CCAS Conservation Chair, Zak Sutton, at zaksutton2@gmail.com.
