Volunteer

Looking for a way to meet people with similar interests, get involved in your community, or help out on various conservation projects? Consider volunteering with the Champaign County Audubon Society!

Champaign County Audubon Society is entirely supported by individuals who volunteer their time for free.

Volunteers contribute valuable expertise, whether simply knowing about our local bird life or lending their unique communication, financial, and technical skills to help our organization continue to run and operate smoothly. We are always seeking a diverse array of individuals to help with events, conservation projects, social media and outreach, or board engagement.

If you are looking for non-profit experience or want to offer your time to help with CCAS functions, please reach out to us (℅ Volunteer Coordinator).

Volunteer Opportunities with CCAS

  • Our Board Leadership typically consists of ~ 12 members: an executive board and supporting board members who serve as committee chairs. Learn more about our current board.

If you are interested in learning more about each position on the Board, feel free to contact the current chair. Board roles are filled for at least one year, but many individuals have served on our board for years. The only requirement (besides enthusiasm!) is that you are able to attend the majority of board meetings, which are held at 7:00 PM on the third Monday of each month January – May and August – November (no meetings in June, July, and December).

If you are interested in joining one of our upcoming board meetings to get an idea of what it's like, we currently meet virtually via Zoom. Contact mail@champaigncountyaudubon.org or head to our events page for login information.

  • Not sure you’re ready to commit to board leadership? Consider joining a committee! You are not obligated to attend all board meetings (although attendance is encouraged!). Instead, you will meet with other committee members under the leadership of the committee chair on an as-needed basis.

Our committees, and their duties, include:

    • Communications: Print and email newsletter, email announcements, website maintenance, graphic design, social media management and outreach

    • Conservation: Funding local projects, facilitating workdays, helping select Kendeigh Grant recipients, monitoring legislative and administrative actions that affect the environment

    • Education: Advertising and selecting Mini-Grant recipients, liaising with local schools, youth education

    • Field Trip: Coordinating short- and long-distance field trips, assisting with Bird Walks and outdoor programs

    • Finance: Assisting with membership, budgets, auditing, taxes, database needs, and financial reports

    • Programs: Contacting potential presenters, organizing and assisting with events, coordinating promotion and advertisement

  • CCAS periodically arranges conservation volunteer events such as removing invasive plants or planting native species at local parks and preserves. Want to join in? Check out the ”Volunteer Opportunities” category on our events page to learn about upcoming dates.

We are also actively looking for people who can help with…

    Reviewing grant applications.
Do you have experience reviewing project proposals and about three hours to spare for reading, rating, and discussing submissions to our Kendeigh Research Grants and/or Mini-Grants for Educators? If interested, please contact the Conservation Chair (Kendeigh Grant review) or Education Chair (Mini-Grant review) at mail@champaigncountyaudubon.org.

Print newsletter distribution, including arranging printing and mailing.
If interested, please contact the Communications Chair at mail@champaigncountyaudubon.org.
